Nonprofit organizations are sometimes referred to as voluntary organizations. Their existence is dependent upon citizen participation as volunteers. Without volunteers who serve as board members, the organization would not be established. Volunteers help deliver programs and services and they serve as the backbone of the organization’s fundraising efforts. Volunteers are one of the most valuable resources of the organization. Therefore, building a strong volunteer program enhances the strength of the nonprofit organization.

This four-workshop series is designed to meet the needs of the next generation of volunteer managers.

Attendees will learn techniques for recruiting, training, placing, retaining, and rewarding volunteers, as well as ways to increase the teamwork with staff in organizations. The sessions will utilize interactive group exercises, case studies, and the integration of sample policies and tools to ground the learning principles in practical application.

The Basics of Managing Volunteers:

Ethics, Risk Management, and a Really Good Volunteer Manual

You will learn:

  • How to establish a code of ethics with regard to volunteers
  • How to manage decisions and risk with regard to volunteers
  • Essential elements and details of a really good volunteer manual

Setting the Stage for a Successful Volunteer Program

Tuition: $70 Members, $140 Nonmembers

Each workshop is a stand-along learning opportunity based on the title topic. You may choose to take just one workshop, or all four, however, we do recommend taking them in listed order for continuity.

To earn the Certificate in Volunteer Management from the Rollins College Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center participants must attend all four sessions in their entirety.

Instructors:

Andrea Hendry is the managing partner for Smart Chicks Consulting, Inc. where she assists nonprofit agencies in streamlining their processes and acts as a community relations specialist to help corporation’s employees connect with their communities through volunteer ism. She specializes in "volun-tourism” and excels at engaging corporate volunteers and donors. She is also the Cities of Service Coordinator for the City of Orlando, coordinating the city’s volunteer activities. In 2009, she was president of the Council of Volunteer Managers of Central Florida. Previously, she has worked in volunteer management with several nonprofit agencies throughout the community, including Give Kids the World Village and Heart of Florida United Way.

Emily Furlong is a senior program manager at the Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership Center. Her nonprofit teaching experience includes fundraising, planning and development, volunteer management, and board governance. She has been a founding member of two nonprofits, Seminole Heart and Habitat for Humanity of Seminole and served as executive director of Seminole Heart. Previously, she served as the volunteer manager at Meals on Wheels and Harbor House.
