Fast Track for Development Directors

In today's economy, more and more nonprofit organizations are finding that obtaining foundation, corporate, and government funding is becoming increasingly difficult. Wisely, they are focusing on individual donors to meet budget shortfalls and improve the nonprofit's ability to meet its mission. This requires skilled development directors who know how to raise significant gifts. Unfortunately, our community does not have enough experienced fundraisers to meet the needs of the nonprofit community. The Rollins College Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center is launching a new program to Fast Track under-experienced development staff who have the potential to be great fundraisers.

This seven-month program is scheduled to run from late September 2012 through April 2013. The program includes:

a) a two-hour workshop for the participant and his/her CEO,

b) five mentoring sessions with paid, "seasoned” development directors who are experienced in major gift fundraising (1.5 hours each),

c) two mentoring sessions that include both the participant and his/her CEO (1.5 hours each),

d) three facilitated roundtable discussions (two hours each), and

e) homework for each session. The homework includes analysis of the organization's readiness to raise major gifts, as well as calls and donor visits by the participant under the guidance of his/her mentor.

Each month includes at least two of the interactive training methods: workshop, mentoring sessions, and roundtables. It will conclude with a graduation and luncheon.

Key to this new program is participation by the CEO. The CEO's commitment is required along with that of the participant. We realize that the leader's time is very valuable so we have minimized the total number of hours required.

The Fast Track curriculum covers the following topics:

· The CEO and Development Director working as a team

· "How to” conduct calls and visits

· Institutional readiness for major gift fundraising

· Donor relations including stewardship

· The case for support

· Realistic expectations of a development office

· Creation of a development plan; Goal-setting

· Board engagement in fundraising

Responsibilities of CEO's:

· Attend a two-hour workshop on September 28th,

CEO & Development Director: The Perfect Team

· Participate in one mentoring session.

· Encourage and allow your employee to participate in all mentoring and roundtable sessions; meet with him/her when necessary to maximize the learning that is taking place.

Program Costs:

The cost for the seven-month program (twenty contact hours) is $1,195.
