The truest indicator of the success of a nonprofit organization is the strength of its board. Learn the nuts and bolts of good board governance in order to build an organization that will be successful and sustainable. Serving on a nonprofit board of directors can be an extremely rewarding experience that allows the individual to impact change in the community, open the door to new friendships, develop leadership skills, and truly make a difference. It also carries immense responsibilities. This workshop explains the roles and responsibilities of being a nonprofit board member, explains the division of duties, and tips for making the experience of board service rewarding both for the individual and the nonprofit organization.You will learn:
- participants will recognize the three responsibilities of board members described in Florida law
- participants will be able to differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the board members, executive director, and staff
- participants will recognize qualities of an effective board of directors
Tuition: $60 Members, $110 Nonmembers
Instructor: Emily Furlong, Senior Program Manager, Philanthropy Center
Emily Furlong is the senior program manager at the Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership Center where she is responsible for continuing education for nonprofit organizations. Her teaching credentials include volunteer management, fundraising and development, and board governance. She has been a founding member of two nonprofits, Seminole Heart and Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County, and served as executive director and Chairman of the Board of Seminole Heart. She is also the past Chairperson of the United Arts of Central Florida’s Standard and Allocation Committee. Previous to these positions she was the volunteer manager at Meals on Wheels and Harbor House. Emily is a graduate of the University of Mississippi.
